Steve Olson presented a great seminar on the wines of Bierzo. His enthusiasm
for wine in general and Bierzo wines in particular was contagious. The reds, mostly 100% Mencia, were excellent.
Steve started us with a basic Mencia that was not oaked and moved on through increasingly more complex and
compelling examples of Bierzo reds. With vines planted in steeply sloped vineyards, low yields, and skillful winemaking,
the quality of thse wines was fantastic. My favorite wine was probably the Dominio de Tares Exaltos 2005.
That's it in the top right of the picture. It had a perfect balance of fruit and tannin. However, I'd be happy
to have a case of any of the wines in my cellar. If you haven't tried a Mencia from Bierzo yet, you owe it to yourself
to see how good they can be.
