Bierzo Seminar

Jon with Steve Olson aka wine geek
Steve Olson presented a great seminar on the wines of Bierzo. His enthusiasm for wine in general and Bierzo wines in particular was contagious. The reds, mostly 100%  Mencia, were excellent. Steve started us with a basic Mencia that was not oaked and moved on through increasingly more complex and compelling  examples of Bierzo reds. With vines planted in steeply sloped vineyards, low yields, and skillful winemaking, the quality of thse wines was fantastic.  My favorite wine was probably the Dominio de Tares Exaltos 2005. That's it in the top right of the picture. It had a perfect balance of fruit and tannin. However, I'd be happy to have a case of any of the wines in my cellar. If you haven't tried a Mencia from Bierzo yet, you owe it to yourself to see how good they can be.

The Lineup
Following the seminar I attended The Great Match with Dave Nelson, The Purple Stain. We sampled some of the best Spanish wines on the market today. At tastings such as these you have to be selective, there are too many wines presented. We mapped out the wines we were most interested in and did our best to keep our palates fresh. From 1968 Gran Reserva Rioja to 2008 Albarino, The Great Match never disappoints.
